Adult ADHD evaluation and treatment in Virginia

Many adults are diagnosed with ADHD after 30, often after years of being told to try harder. A proper evaluation is the first step. Most new patients are seen within two weeks.

Does this sound familiar?

  • Starting tasks is hard and finishing them is harder
  • Losing track of time, keys, deadlines and conversations
  • Restlessness, or a mind that jumps between ten things
  • Doing well under pressure and poorly with routine
  • A history of similar struggles in school, even if grades were fine

How we treat adhd

Adult ADHD evaluation at VPMC Mental Wellness is a two-visit process: a full history and structured rating scales at the first visit, and a review of results, other possible explanations and a treatment plan at the second. When medication is appropriate we prescribe stimulant and non-stimulant options and monitor them closely, following Virginia prescription-monitoring requirements. We also work on the systems and habits that medication alone doesn't fix, with our therapist when helpful.

What the first visit is like

A 60-minute history with Omar Ahmad, PMHNP-BC, plus rating scales you complete beforehand. A second visit within two weeks reviews everything and sets the plan.

Visits are in person in Reston or Lansdowne, or by secure video anywhere in Virginia. Evening video appointments are available.

Common questions

Can I get a stimulant prescription at my first visit?

No. Medication decisions are made after the evaluation is complete, usually at the second visit. We do not provide same-day stimulant prescriptions for new patients.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly online, or call or text us. If your doctor referred you, we will send them a summary after your first visit with your permission.

Do you take insurance?

Yes. We are in network with most major plans through Privia Medical Group. See our insurance page for the current list and self-pay rates.

How soon can I be seen?

Most new patients are seen within 14 days. Urgent referrals from a provider are usually seen within 7 days.

Can I do my visits by video?

Yes. We see patients by secure video anywhere in Virginia. Some first visits and some conditions are better in person; we will tell you which.

Will my primary care doctor know?

Only with your permission. If you are a VPMC primary care patient, your mental health and medical care are coordinated in one record.
